We study the cognitive behaviour of the diagnostic decision maker. We view diagnosis as a process of decision making under uncertainty, analogous to other decision processes studied in psychological decision theory. We address questions such as: How do diagnostic decision makers represent and use their knowledge, how do they create mental models, what cognitive heuristics do they use, how does mood influence decision making processes? We also study the correctness of these diagnostic processes,
and how and where computerised
decision support is suitable.
