Ed Hollander is a senior
associate professor, Department of Communication, and director of
studies at the University of Nijmegen. His research interests include
policy studies and theoretical and empirical research on local and
regional media. For the past three decades he has been involved in (early)
studies of local cable television experiments in The Netherlands and
has done research on community press, community radio and television,
and digital community networks. The research for his dissertation,
Local Communication and the Local Public Sphere, provided the
groundwork for translating Habermas's notion of public sphere to
community media. Hollander is an editor of Gazette. The
International Journal for Communication and was a member of
the Intergovernmental Council of the International Program for
Development Communication of UNESCO.
